Bernabeu to host 2010 Champions League final

Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium will stage the 2010 Champions League final, UEFA announced on Friday.

The stadium, which was awarded "Elite status" four months ago by European football's governing body, beat off competition from London's Wembley and the Olympiastadion in Berlin to be awarded the final by UEFA's Executive Committee.

A statement on Madrid's website, www.realmadrid.com, read: "The award of this final reaffirms the presence of Real Madrid in the international Institutions."

The decision sees the Spanish outfit - who have won the competition more times than any other club - stage the final for the first time in 30 years.

The Bernabeu was also the site for the final of Europe's premier club competition in 1957, 1969 and 1980 as well as the World Cup final in 1982.

Hamburg's HSH Nordbank Arena has been chosen to host the 2010 UEFA Cup final.

Barcelona: Agent plays down Ronaldinho exit

Roberto Assis, the brother and agent of Barcelona star Ronaldinho, has denied claims the 28-year-old forward has already made up his mind to leave the Catalan club in the summer.

On Thursday reports originating in Brazil suggested Ronaldinho and his brother were considering the possibility of invoking article 17 of FIFA's transfer regulations, which allows players to buy out the remainder of their contract under certain circumstances.

The news ignited speculation in the Spanish media that Ronaldinho was certain to leave the Nou Camp in the summer, but on Friday Assis told Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo that his comments did not constitute a statement of intent.

"It's not that we intended to go to FIFA and use article 17 to free Ronnie from his contract," he said.

"What I said was merely a response to a question asking if we were aware of this legislation."

Assis also denied speculation that he was engineering a deal to take his brother to Real Madrid, saying: "It is not true, there has been nothing between us and them."

On Thursday Assis told GloboEsporte.com: "The possibility of Ronaldinho leaving Barcelona is always there.

"We are aware of the release clause, but we also know about the existence of article 17. Anything is possible."

He was also quoted as saying: "(Real Madrid signing Barca players) has already happened a number of times, even with big names such as Luis Figo."

Barcelona: Ronaldinho could leave, says agent

With relations between Ronaldinho and his club Barcelona strained, the player's brother and agent Roberto Assis has admitted a summer transfer is a possibility.

The 27-year-old has played just seven full games so far this season, and has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Nou Camp - with AC Milan and Chelsea among several clubs reportedly interested in him.

The Brazilian came under renewed pressure when scans showed he was not carrying a thigh injury, despite the player's claims to the contrary keeping him out of Barca's 4-1 win over Real Valladolid.

Ronaldinho reportedly has a release clause in his contract, but with the value thought to be prohibitively high, a more likely option should he be determined to leave would seem the possibility of invoking article 17 of FIFA's transfer regulations.

This allows players to buy out the remainder of their contract under certain circumstances and would likely prove a cheaper option.

Assis told GloboEsporte.com: "The possibility for Ronaldinho leaving Barcelona is always there.

"We are aware of the release clause, but we also know about the existence of article 17. Anything is possible.

"In football, results determine how things go. Barcelona have not won anything since last season and, as Ronaldinho is the star of the team, he is the one who is given the worst criticism."

Assis did not rule out the possibility of Ronaldinho moving to Real Madrid, saying: "It has already happened a number of times, even to big names such as Luis Figo.

"However, I don't like to name specific clubs."

Assis added Ronaldinho could well stay at the Nou Camp should Barca win either the Primera Liga or Champions League title.

He said: "The relationship is strained, but imagine if Barca win the Champions League. They wouldn't let him go if he was a champion, would they?

"With their hands on a title, everything would be different."

Relegation Avoided!

Andy Reid chose the perfect moment to open his Sunderland account with an injury-time winner which fired Sunderland to within touching distance of Premier League safety. The Irishman struck in the sixth minute of injury time as the Black Cats finally made the pressure tell with the game seemingly heading for a draw.

Kenwyne Jones had earlier ended his personal goal drought with a 28th-minute equaliser, his first goal in 11 games, to cancel out Freddie Ljungberg's deflected opener. But it was Reid who claimed the headlines when he volleyed home in time added on for injuries to John Pantsil and Ljungberg as the visitors finished the game with 10 men having used all their substitutes.

Daryl Murphy in particular will have been delighted to see his compatriot's shot hit the back of the net after passing up a golden opportunity to win it nine minutes from time. But manager Roy Keane and the bulk of a crowd of 45,690 headed home knowing the road to survival is nearing its end with the prospect of another season of Premier League football within their grasp.

Keane was stunned to discover in the run-up to the game that his side had not won consecutive Barclays Premier League fixtures since they defeated Everton and Blackburn in December 2001, a situation he was desperate to address at the earliest opportunity. The Black Cats' surprise 1-0 win at Aston Villa last week meant injury-hit West Ham's trip to the Stadium of Light handed them the chance to put that right this afternoon, although the visitors were not prepared to stick to the script.

They might have taken the lead with just 10 minutes gone when former Newcastle skipper Scott Parker turned up on the left edge of the penalty area to square the ball to Dean Ashton. The striker needed no second invitation as he deftly side-footed the ball past Craig Gordon, only to see it come back off the upright. Sunderland's respite, however, was only temporary, and they fell behind eight minutes later, largely as a result of their inability to clear their lines.

Carlton Cole made the most of hesitation in the Wearsiders' defence to lay the ball off for Ljungberg, whose firm shot struck Nyron Nosworthy on its way into the bottom corner. But Keane's men responded swiftly and having previously wasted a series of good openings with poor final balls, they eventually made the pressure tell. Kieran Richardson found space on the left to drill a low cross in towards the near post, where Murphy flicked on for Jones to score from point-blank range.

The Hammers could not believe an offside flag did not put a stop to the Trinidad and Tobago international's celebrations, but replays showed the officials got a close call just about right. Michael Chopra and Reid both tested Robert Green as Sunderland took control, but it was Gordon who had to pull off a vital fingertip save eight minutes before the break to keep out Cole's curling effort. Danny Collins headed a 43rd-minute Reid cross wide, but the home side were grateful for referee Andre Marriner's lenience on the stroke of half-time when Parker went down under Nosworthy's challenge inside the box and the official waved play on.

Sunderland, and Murphy in particular, emerged for the second half in determined fashion with the Irishman forcing a smart save from Green seconds before defender Jonathan Spector hurriedly hacked his cross away at the near post. Lucas Neill, who had moved to left-back to accommodate the arrival of half-time substitute Pantsil on the right, was in the right place at the right time when he hacked Collins' 54th-minute header off the line. Chopra only just failed to make a telling contact with Murphy's cross as he dived to meet it on the hour, and Alan Curbishley made a further change when he sent on former Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano for Cole to a predictably hostile welcome.

Keane made a double change with 19 minutes remaining when he replaced Richardson and Chopra with Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter, but it was Murphy who should have won it 10 minutes later. Jones muscled his way into the penalty area to cross for his strike partner 10 yards out, but he fired high over as the Hammers escaped.

Ljungberg's afternoon ended in agony when he was stretchered off with a hamstring injury which left his side to play out the closing stages with 10 men. But then substitute Edwards' 88th-minute cross flew across goal, where fellow replacement James Tomkins got a crucial touch to deny Jones a winner. However, there was nothing Tomkins or anyone else could do to deny Reid when he raced on to Anton Ferdinand's header and blasted a shot past Green.

Five Things Wrong With Microsoft

Microsoft has held the distinction of being the market leader for most of the console race, until they were overtaken by the Nintendo Wii. Sporting a solid online service with Xbox Live (more on that in a bit) and a great slate of games that cater to the hardcore audience, the Xbox 360 has proven that Microsoft is a powerful force in this industry.

Yet, as with the Nintendo and Sony, I’ve got some problems with Microsoft. Detailed below are the top five.

5. Xbox Live

You might be expecting that I’m going to rail against Xbox Live because you pay a fee; think again. Until Sony can provide something of similar or superior service, the $50 a year is well spent, for the most part. That’s not to say that Xbox Live is not without some nagging problems. The service has been on shaky ground, though it isn’t as bad as it was just after Christmas. I’ve still had issues with connecting and reconnecting to the service, which is inexcusable when you are paying for a service.

Aside from stability issues, why are there ads on my game console? I’m not one to complain about in-game advertising, as I really don’t have a problem with it in general. However, I’m paying you $50 and you’ve got the guts to place ads in my face? Now, if you were willing to drop the price (or drop it all together) and place advertisements, then fine. Put your ads in, I don’t care. I might even look into one or two. Otherwise, get them off my dashboard, thank you.

4. Xbox 360 Ultra-Uber Gamer Hardcore Xtreme SKU

Forgive the title if you aren’t totally sure what the hell I’m talking about. Much like Sony has been doing, Microsoft is continuing to release SKU after SKU into the market that confuses gamers and casual consumers alike. To date, there have been: Core, Arcade, Pro, Premium, Elite and the special Halo 3 edition console. Six! Six different console configurations. I can understand and appreciate giving people choices, but I doubt consumers in the market are that segmented. Aside from that, look at the names for each of the system SKU. I consider myself a “core” gamer, as the marketing department would say, but Christ. Do they want their video game system to be that niche? Didn’t the name “Xbox” cement your “hardcore” cred? Jeff “Yo Dawg, Wuz Poppin” Bell didn’t cement the “hardcore” appeal?

3. Marketplace Redesign

I do love that there is so much content available on Xbox Live. Too bad the design of the Marketplace is so drab, dull and unwieldy that I usually don’t care to check what is up most of the time. Take Rock Band, for example, (before the in-game music store) and think how terrible that was. You first had to find Rock Band by scrolling through all of the titles, (or if it was more recent, it’d be “spotlighted”) finding Rock Band the game, and then scrolling through another list full of tracks to find the one song that you actually want. How about a search feature? I can’t imagine how terrible that could get by Christmas of this year.

Aside from the general unwieldiness of the entire system, could they have made a plainer design? The current setup is, for all intents and purposes, a text box. I’m trying to purchase your content Microsoft, not read a novel. Spruce the Marketplace up a bit, will you? Oh, while you’re doing that, could you please not charge us for “gamer pictures” and “themes” (also known as screenshots)? Thanks.

2. Price

Here’s another thing that Microsoft and Sony have in common with each other: Their system costs too much money. Sure, with Microsoft, you have the Arcade pack that goes for $279, but it’s not viewed or marketed seriously enough to actually make any sort of dent. The package that most individuals see as “the” Xbox 360 is the Pro package, which runs at $350.

The Xbox 360 has been on the market how long again? And it’s how much? If you want one of the reasons why the Nintendo Wii has been kicking so much Microsoft and Nintendo tail in the hardware sale charts, look no further than price. The fact that their system is still at such a high price, this far into the game, goes to show you how much video games have grown. But until the Xbox 360 reaches the $199-$249 range, they’ll continue to miss out on a huge market of gamers.

1. Recognizable Characters

Alright, so Microsoft might not have been in the game as long as Sony or Nintendo has. So what? They’ve got a grand total of one character on their entire platform that means much: Master Chief. (Yeah, you might all be screaming about Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad, but that’s Epic’s IP, people.) You look back at Sony and see characters like Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Kratos, among others. Then you peer over at Nintendo (do I really need to go through the list?) and then you take a look back at Microsoft.

Why have the not been able to create memorable characters? Your guess is as good as mine. But for the people who have been clamoring for the off-and-on rumored “Xbox Portable,” look at this as the sole reason that you will not get one. If they were to even create an Xbox Portable, what would they even have in their line-up to make the transition? Answer: A lot of Halo, with a smattering of Ninja Gaiden and Viva Pinata. They simply do not have the characters needed to create a good foundation, and are relying too heavily on third-parties to provide it. Third-party support isn’t going to last forever, boys.

Mourinho denies Inter talks

Jose Mourinho has categorically denied rumours suggesting he has met with Internazionale about succeeding Roberto Mancini.

The former Chelsea boss was thought to be in talks with the Serie A champions about taking over at the end of the season, but the Portuguese has told an agency in his homeland that there is no truth in the reports.

A statement issued to Lusa said: "I say categorically that it is not true that I went to Milan, that I met with (Inter president) Massimo Moratti, who I do not have the pleasure of knowing personally.

"It is false to say that I am on the point of agreeing a contract with Inter Milan."

Mourinho has been out of work since leaving Stamford Bridge at the start of the season

Entertaining New Tactic

Wayne Rooney grabbed a brace just when Manchester United needed it the most as the Red Devils moved six points clear of the rest at the top of the Barclays Premier League. The England striker had gone six matches for the title-chasers without hitting the target but he rediscovered his touch at Old Trafford as United made it six straight league wins to tighten their grip at the top.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with his 35th goal of a remarkable season and Carlos Tevez added a second to leave Villa stunned. With Arsenal claiming a dramatic victory at Bolton, United knew it was important to keep the momentum going. And they did just that, going 2-0 ahead in the first half to take a firm grip on the match.

Even though Ashley Young went close with a shot in the fourth minute Villa never looked like ending a miserable run of results at the ground, stretching back 25 years. That close shave only succeeded in getting United going and Rooney rattled in a shot from the edge of the area that was cleared by Stiliyan Petrov. Ryan Giggs then slipped the ball through to Tevez in the 10th minute but Mellberg made a crucial block.

United almost took the lead a minute later when Michael Carrick released Ronaldo. He cut inside only to see his effort turned around the post by goalkeeper Scott Carson. Giggs swung in the corner and Brown peeled away from his marker only to head over the bar. United went ahead in the 17th minute. Villa failed to clear Giggs' corner and Rio Ferdinand chested the ball into Ronaldo's path.

The Portugal winger clipped an outrageous back-heel through Martin Laursen's legs and beyond Carson. Considering they had not won at the ground in the league for 25 years, Villa were facing an uphill task early in the game. Nigel Reo-Coker, drafted in at right-back instead of his usual midfield role, was struggling to settle. United made it 2-0 after 33 minutes with Ronaldo this time setting up the goal.

He latched on to a clever pass from Scholes and delivered a cross to the back post. Reo-Coker had gone missing and Tevez was left with the simple task of heading the ball home. United were knocking the ball around with ease with Scholes at the heart of everything good about their play. United should have extended their lead in the 48th minute when Rooney was sent clear by Tevez.

It looked as though he must score but the England striker sent his effort wide from close range. Villa substitute Shaun Maloney followed suit a minute later when he rattled his effort wide with only Tomasz Kuszczak to beat. United hit back and Ronaldo came close in the 52nd minute when his shot hit Wilfred Bouma and came back off the bar. However a minute later Rooney made it 3-0 when he rounded Carson after Ronaldo's flick-on split the Villa defence.

It was Rooney's first goal in six games in all competitions for United and he savoured the moment after taking his tally to 16. However Maloney nearly reduced the arrears in the 55th minute only for Kuszczak to make a superb block. With Roma in mind next Tuesday in the Champions League, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made three substitutions in the 62nd minute.

Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and John O'Shea replaced Patrice Evra, Ferdinand and Michael Carrick. United remained in the driving seat and Tevez should have scored in the 66th minute only to head wide in front of the posts following a cross from Hargreaves before Rooney hit the post. Rooney made it 4-0 in the 70th minute with his second of the game after again being released by Ronaldo and Villa boss Martin O'Neill cut a miserable figure in the lashing rain.

Rooney thought he had scored his hat-trick in the 78th minute, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. Given his unselfish running it would have been well deserved in an impressive show by United. They played out the last four minutes with 10 men as Giggs came off with what appeared to be a knock.

Great Fight Back!!

Ten-man Arsenal re-ignited their faint Premier League title hopes by coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Bolton. Two goals from Matthew Taylor either side of Abou Diaby's sending-off for a reckless challenge on Gretar Steinsson appeared to have given struggling Wanderers a much-needed boost.

However, in the second half William Gallas poked home a corner before Robin van Persie equalised from the penalty spot after Gary Cahill had brought down Alexander Hleb and Jlloyd Samuel's own goal with seconds remaining capped a remarkable turnaround. The result was just what Arsenal needed after going five league matches without a win, a run which appeared to have derailed their bid to catch leaders Manchester United.

It also ended Arsenal's remarkable run of not having won at the Reebok in the league since April 2002. Wenger almost paid the price for leaving 23-goal leading scorer Emmanuel Adebayor - probably with Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool in mind - on the bench for an hour. Arsenal certainly missed him as they dominated the early stages without threatening.

They should have been ahead in the ninth minute when Hleb threaded a through-ball to Van Persie but with only the goalkeeper to beat he drove straight at Ali Al Habsi. Nicklas Bendtner then had a shot was charged down by Cahill, before the Danish striker was very close to latching on to Fabregas' quickly-taken free-kick but his slide at the far post came too late.

In the 14th minute Arsenal were made to pay for not making more of their possession. From a throw-in El-Hadji Diouf played in Steinsson down the right and the full-back curled in a superb cross which Taylor headed powerfully past Manuel Almunia from six yards. It was Bolton's first goal in seven hours and 19 minutes of football in all competitions.

Van Persie tried to twist his way towards goal but Steinsson blocked him off at the expense of a corner and when Arsenal earned a second immediately afterwards Toure thought he had come close to scoring. His drilled effort from outside the penalty area took a deflection off Bendtner to wrong-foot Al Habsi but as the goalkeeper watched the ball roll agonisingly wide of the post the assistant referee's flag had already gone up for offside against Gallas.

mfl Page 2: 17:13 Arsenal's problems worsened after 31 minutes when Diaby dived in studs-up on Steinsson's ankle and referee Chris Foy had no hesitation in showing a red card. And just when it looked like they would get to half-time without further mishap Taylor scored a fortuitous second in the 42nd minute. McCann robbed Flamini on the edge of his own penalty and when Diouf squared the ball Taylor's left-footed strike deflected off Gallas and past Almunia.

Davies forced Senderos into conceding a corner in the second minute after the interval and when Taylor fired in his shot Cahill's backheel took it just wide of Almunia's near post. Bolton were growing in confidence and beginning to play the ball around more to make use of their numerical advantage. Diouf was booked in the 55th minute for reacting angrily to Van Persie's challenge despite the referee already awarding him a free-kick.

Cahill's header from a Taylor corner then produced a good reaction save from the Gunners goalkeeper. Wenger finally brought on Adebayor and Theo Walcott on the hour, with Senderos and Bendtner making way as Arsenal changed to three at the back. And out of nowhere the visitors got themselves back in the match from Van Persie's 63rd-minute corner when Campo jumped but missed his header and Gallas stole in unmarked to score at the far post.

Six minutes later the Gunners were level when Van Persie converted from the penalty spot after Cahill was adjudged to have brought down Hleb. It was harsh on Al Habsi, who had saved well from Flamini seconds earlier after the midfielder had collected Adebayor's backheel. The confidence drained out of the hosts as Arsenal went for victory, although Campo did have one half-chance which he blazed over from outside the box.

Van Persie twice had opportunities to snatch victory but fired well over on both occasions, once from seven yards. And with seconds to go Arsenal snatched victory when Hleb's cross from the left took two deflections, the last off Samuel to give the Gunners' hope in the title race.

From the back

Betis bounce back for the three points (3-2)

Barça have lost a game that seemed to be done and dusted in their favour at half time. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, Betis staged a spectacular second half comeback to leave Barça’s title challenge on edge.

The Ruiz de Lopera witnessed an incredible comeback performance by Real Betis, who looked well out of contention after going down 2-0 in the first half. Chaparro’s side looked hopelessly out of their depth, but turned the game around with three goals in the last twenty minutes to leave Frank Rijkaard’s side devastated.

Lethal opening

The first half was all about Barcelona. Not only did they dominate the midfield, but they were able to turn their chances into goals. Within fifteen minutes they were already two up. The opener came from a magnificent assist from Xavi to find Eto’o, whose shot struck the post, but an opportunistic Bojan was at hand to beat a number of rivals to the rebound and put Barça ahead after 13 minutes. Moments later and Eto’o latched onto a quality pass from Iniesta to beat Casto and make it 2-0.

Playing for pleasure

Barça had Betis enclosed in their own half and enjoyed an almost embarrassingly large proportion of the possession. Iniesta and Xavi created chance after chance for Barça’s star studded forward line, while both full backs also pushed forward to create goalscoring opportunities that missed the target by a matter of millimetres.

Complete change in fortune

With the win apparently well in their grasp, Barça played a contention game in the second half. They again dominated the control of the centre of the park, but this time failed to create as many clear cut opportunities. The game slowed to an almost unbearably dull pace, with the home fans falling almost silent before Edu restored hope with a trademark header on 63 minutes. This was the start of fourteen minutes Barcelona will prefer to forget. Betis had looked well out of it, but the goal reinvigorated them and Odonkor almost made it two each when taking advantage of a mix up in the Barcelona defence.

Two crucial minutes

Things no longer looked quite so safe for Barça, and tragedy almost struck when the referee indicated a penalty in favour of the Andalusian outfit. Valdés saved the spot kick but just seconds later and Juanito collected a loose ball in the Barça area and struck it well out of reach of Valdés and into the back of the Barça net.. The Betis fans were still celebrating the equaliser when a tremendous individual run by Edu through a dumbstruck Barça defence made it 3-1 to the green and whites with 12 minutes left on the clock. Barcelona found no response to that and Betis took the three points from an incredible game that they never looked like winning until the final minutes. Meanwhile, the defeat comes as a cruel blow to Barça's chances of winning La Liga.

Goal

0-1 Bojan (13')
0-2 Eto'o (16')
1-2 Edu (63')
2-2 Juanito (76')
3-2 Edu (78')
